Koyaanisqatsi has no words and no immediately discernable characters. Rather, it’s a collage of videos focused on our earth and set to a score by Philip Glass. The goal is to show a world that is out of balance with itself. In that sense you might expect it to come on the heels of An Inconvenient Truth, not 20 years before it. However, unlike An Inconvenient Truth, it’s the film’s simplicity that makes it effective. There are no talking heads, only beautiful but often uncomfortable images set to a score that creates an epic sense of suspense and urgency. It’s sort of feels like Planet Earth meets A Clockwork Orange. Whether you are interested in its politics or not, Koyaanisqatsi is a truly stunning film.
