In the late 1950s Herb (a post office clerk) married Dorothy (a librarian). They lived a humble life in a small Manhattan apartment. In the 1960s, when little attention was being paid to minimalist and conceptual art, Herb and Dorothy began to acquire works from mostly unknown artist. Living on Dorothy’s salary, they devoted 100% of Herb’s income to art. The result, in 1992 the couple was able to give the National Gallery of Art one of the most important collections of minimalist and conceptual art in the world. Although the collection is estimated to be worth millions, Herb and Dorothy never sold a single piece and gave their collection to the National Gallery for free. Herb and Dorothy have collected nearly 5,000 pieces of art during their lives. They are still collecting today.
