I always assumed that Mike Tyson was just some crazy fool. By his own admission, Tyson is definitely crazy. However, he is no fool. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say he is articulate (a nice thing in a documentary). He is just so troubled that the things he communicates allow everyone to dismiss him as a crazy fool.
Adults must be accountable for their choices, but each of us was born into a unique set of circumstances. From these varying perspectives the foundation for our decisions is shaped. Although accountability must exist, to learn about someone, you have to ask why they choose to do the things they do. It’s at this point in the story that filmmakers must walk a fine line between understanding and not holding their subjects accountable. I think Tyson is a job well done.
