“Nobody joins a cult”
Jim Jones’ appeal and power is terrifying. Jones took a group of people who were helping the poor and fighting for social equality in their communities to South America. Ultimately, he spoke to them through a loudspeaker, ordering them to get into a line, take a cup of poison and drink it. The majority of them did. Many who drank the poison were educated. Many of them had their families with them. They were all working to better their community. They were not the kind of people joined cults.
